HUGE ANTIQUE VICTORIAN CORNER NICHE, GOTHIC WALL SHELF

vm20080518_21.jpg HUGE ANTIQUE VICTORIAN CORNER NICHE, GOTHIC WALL SHELF

Absolutely fabulous & rare antique Victorian era corner niche or vitrine style shelf, ornate Gothic styling with extensive scroll cut and turned fretwork, massive 35" size and remarkable condition! Isn't this one simply gorgeous! A great old Victorian era piece, wonderfully ornate in an always popular Gothic style. A wall mounted corner piece, it is an impressive 35" tall and just under 20" at its wides! Ornate fretwork, three covered niches with turned columns and arched overhangs, great to display a variety of treasures including, but definitely not limited to, religious sculptures of artifacts! A label on the back for the Winchester, England White & Co. Furniture Depositories. Amazing condition and immense visual appeal, don't miss it!
Very good condition! A few age or drying splits in some of the scroll cut work but, as you can see, the entire piece is in remarkable condition! No missing fretwork in the lower finial, no breaks or repairs that I can see in elsewhere. The piece appears to be in a lighter wood so it is relatively delicate. We'll need to ship this one via DHL ground due to the size so count on around $50 for continental US shipping. See pictures for measurements. » Continue reading "HUGE ANTIQUE VICTORIAN CORNER NICHE, GOTHIC WALL SHELF"

ANTIQUE VICTORIAN CIVIL WAR JOHNSON ATLAS COLOR MAPS

vm2008051518.jpg ANTIQUE VICTORIAN CIVIL WAR JOHNSON ATLAS COLOR MAPS

"Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas"
with Descriptions
Geographical, Statistical & Historical
Compiled, Drawn & Engraved
Under the Supervision of
J.H. Colton and A.J. Johnson
New York: Johnson & Browning,
Formerly
(Successors to J.H. Colton and Company)
No. 133 Nassau Street
1861
Copyright 1860; Johnson & Browning;
District Court for the Eastern Dist. of Virginia

Dimensions: Open Book/Double-Page Maps= 18" H x 27-1/2 W"

Single Page Maps=18" H x 15" W

Note: All map dimensions are similar. However, some maps are placed vertically. Others, horizontally.

All maps are Full Page. Some cover Double-Pages, arranged side by side. All are blank on reverse.

I have compared the maps with the list in the Index; ALL are present and complete. Atlas is whole.

"Johnson & Browning" provenence; map margins.

This is an authentic 147 year-old Atlas; not a modern-day reprint, facsimile, or DVD. The text pages which accompany the maps are very well-written, with many historic "gems" long forgotten, or perhaps never known. Explanatory notes in the map legends are equally fascinating.

Fine engraved illustrations embellish a good number of the maps here. The explanatory discussions found in the "geography section", or text pages of the Atlas, have many similar engravings.

There are 63 total maps, 60 on numbered pages, and three maps on un-numbered pages. Thirty-two of these are double-page (if I counted correctly). The remainder are full page maps, on a single page.

There are ninety-nine (99) numbered pages of textual "geography discussions" which accompany the maps. It is easy to get confused, since the maps are numbered pages 1-92, and the text pages, 1-99. The map numbers are much larger, so that is how you can keep them straight.

Key among the maps (in my opinion) is "Johnson's New Military Map", which has a copyright date of 1861, rather than 1860, the copyright date for the rest of the book. I will also note that the Military Map copyright was entered in New York, not in Virginia, like the rest of the Atlas. Surely, Johnson and Browning realized how critical timing (and marketing) would be for such a map in the year the South seceded. Americans would want a current view of where the impending action would be taking place. » Continue reading "ANTIQUE VICTORIAN CIVIL WAR JOHNSON ATLAS COLOR MAPS"

Note the elaborate floral and aesthetic swag suspended underneath the center post plus the twisted rope atop the base that the cherubs reach onto. Original Finish!

We love these Victorian Griffin pieces. This one has a Philadelphia label on the back from Keystone Furniture. That may be a manufacturer or a retailer. The carved winged griffins and claw feet are well executed and in good condition. The curved glass is original as are the wooden shelves. The finish is also original with a nice dark patina.

~

Condition is very good with the original finish. Measurements are 70" high, 51" wide, and 21" deep. Shipping by our truck would be 200.00 to 500.00 within the 48 states. Send us your zip for a quote.
